I'm thinking about a new upper for 3-gun |
|
Wish list-
Flat Top
16 inch
Keep it "light"
Probably free float
Using a 1-4x scope (Accupoint, Burris XTR, Millett?) Leaning toward Accupoint.
Looking at a RRA CAR A4 with a light weight 16" chrome moly barrel, gas block sight base, Badger Tactical latch, and a RRA free float tube. MSRP $603.
It would go on my current RRA A2 lower.
I would appreciate input and feedback. If anyone knows of a good source (price), that would be a big help.
If anyone has one and needs to sell it to buy a crib, stroller, etc., let me know.
Thanks,
Harry

A 1 in 8 twist barrel would give you more flexibility to shoot heavier bullets (69 to 77 grain). The heavies have less wind drift at long ranges and smacks the steel for more visible hits. But, the heavier bullets cost more. Most of the stock barrels come with a 1 in 9 twist.
Your wish list looks good for shooting matches with targets out to 300 yds.

I appreciate the feedback. I have thought about the twist rate. It is very likely I will never shoot anything but 55gr. It is highly unlikely I will shoot anything beyond 300yds.
It is worth thinking about.
Thanks

The RRA forend is pretty heavy. Lightweights are available from Larue, Daniel Defense, JP among others. If you are not planning on mounting anything on it Clark Custom makes a carbon fiber one that is VERY light. I've also heard that Armalite sells "scratch and dent" fiberglass forends.

FWIW....
I had a carbon fiber forend on one of my rifles. Shane and I had to destroy the damn thing to get it off. Didn't matter though as long as it was off. That forend heated up more than any other forend I have seen. During a heavy / fast paced rifle stage I would need a glove. JP's VTAC forend has been my favorite. Has plenty of slots for keeping things cool or mounting components. Plus, it just looks sexy.
Just my .02 worth

Thanks Lewie
I have gotten some really good information from the guys here on the board and in conversations.
I put this out there to learn and I have.
My initial configuration was probably the biggest bang for the buck, but not the best.
I will probably firm up what I plan to do by the end of the month.
My upper will probably cost more than I hoped and perform far better than it would have.
I don't want to be limited by the gun, but that isn't likely to be the primary limiting factor. I'm still pulling the trigger.
Thanks

Lots of good experience you can tap into on this board. I'm a firm believer of learning from others experience, or mistakes, which usually saves me money in the long run. Everyone has thier personal preference but I think everyone would agree that a great optic, a crisp light trigger, a good comp, and a free float tube would be amoung the top priorities of building a choice rifle. Good luck with the build and don't hesitate to learn from others while keeping it to your personal liking.

I appreciate all the advice and I used most of it. I finally located an upper that had 98% of what I wanted, it was available, and I bought it. Of course it cost more than I had planned, but it always does. Thanks to all who gave advice and offered assistance. Now if anyone would like to pass the hat to help pay for the optic, I really would be grateful.

I don't know what price level of optics you typically run but a very good quality economical brand is either the Vortex Diamondback or Viper series of scopes. A 2x-7x with the BCM reticle is what I run and it's handled all the 3 gun scenarios I've encountered so far.

Ok, so you got your kitchen pass revoked on match day and you are busting me about home maintenance?
I shot yesterday and today.
If you are claiming work related, I want to see the body.

After seeing the pictures of your new upper sitting on the decomposed deck…I decided to stay home and stain my deck……as for the body its in another state?
